To Lift or not to Lift?
Ladies, I’m not going to lie to you. Every time I enter the weight room at the gym, I feel like all the men stop what they are doing and stare at me. I think part of that is because I am usually the only woman to venture into that specific area of the club. (I’ll admit, it’s a little intimidating!) But I think the other reason why they are staring at me is that they aren’t used to seeing a female lift such heavy weights.
After a few seconds of shock and awe, they usually get right back to work. But…why is it that I am the only woman in there lifting weights? Shouldn’t we all be working on our strength? After all, muscle is the “fountain of youth.”
So here’s the truth, y’all. When women lift heavy dumbbells (I’m talking anywhere from 8 lbs. to 25 lbs. based on their personal strength), they are NOT going to bulk up. We just simply don’t have the testosterone levels to get there! Instead, they will get leaner and tighter…which is what we all want, right? That said, if your weight routine involves 3 or 5 lb. dumbbell bicep curls with medium effort, please ask yourself…is that really enough?
I recommend picking dumbbells that is are so heavy to you, that after 8-12 reps with good form, you can’t do any more and need a break. It’s that type of lifting that will help tighten your body. Plus, when you gain more muscle, your metabolism increases. It’s a win-win! So, don’t be shy… get in that weight room and pick up some big ol’ weights!! I’ll see you in there!
